It occurred to me yesterday that I have been writing this Internet chat blog for nearly a year and I am yet to share my profound hatred of Birkenstocks.
This surprises me because when it comes to fashion and clothing there are many things I hate, and Birkenstocks are right up there with the leggings worn as pants trend and people who wear singlet tops with scarves.
You see the thing is that Birkenstocks are so profoundly ugly that all arguments of comfort fly out the window.
I am a big believer in comfortable footwear for every day use (I save being uncomfortable for special occasions). Birkenstock wearers tend to respond to my heckling jeers by saying "but they're so comfortable". Ummm, so are my pyjamas, but you don't see me wearing them down the street.
The funny thing is, I can think of at least five other types of comfortable footwear, all of which are more attractive than Birkenstocks, including:
* Runners
* Thongs
* Ballet flats
* Sandals
* Two bits of insulated foam strapped to your feet with bandages.My friend Lara and I have decided that when it comes to men, the wearing of Birkenstocks is pretty much a dealbreaker. In fact Christian Bale himself could walk up to me and if he was wearing Birkenstocks, I would tell him to take a hike back to the Batcave.
Oh and as a side note, just why was I thinking about Birkenstocks yesterday? Well here's the scary part. Wandering the streets in an aimless fashion near my home, what should I come across but AN ENTIRE SHOP DEVOTED TO BIRKENSTOCKS. Yes, the fashion Antichrist has arrived, and it's living on Sydney's northside.
