The E-2 Hawkeye is an airborne early warning (AEW) aircraft, developed by Northrup Grumman in the 1960s; since then it has been regularly upgraded and is the most widely used AEW system in the world. Its most distinctive feature is the 24 ft / 7.3m disk-like radar dome mounted on the upper fuselage between wings and tail. This device enables the E-2 to perform sea and land surveillance, direct fighter pilots to targets, control search and rescue missions, and relay radio communications. Established during the Vietnam War era, the VAW-116 “Sun Kings” is a US Navy command and control squadron that is still operational today.
